When Jen woke up, she was disappointed to discover that Fezren had already left. All signs that he had spent the night were gone - he had even tucked his side of the bed in.

Her sadness evaporated when Mali burst into the room without knocking ten minutes later.

“It’s time,” the woman announced.

“For what?” Jen asked, rubbing her eyes.

“Your pregnancy test,” she said, brandishing a small stick in front of her. Jen took it.

“What am I supposed to do with this?” she asked.

“You pee on it,” Mali replied impatiently, in a tone that suggested she thought Jen was an idiot for even having to ask.

“Okay, I will,” she said, heading towards the bathroom. It seemed fascinating to her that people had managed to invent spaceships, yet still couldn’t find a classier way to determine pregnancy than making the woman piss on a stick.

Mali followed her into the bathroom.

“I can do it by myself,” Jen said uncomfortably.

The alien woman shook her large head vigorously, making her jewelery clank together. “There is no room for error here. I must ensure you don’t ruin this.”

“It’s pretty hard to mess up peeing on a stick,” she grumbled, but Mali refused to leave. The alien woman seemed angry at Jen for some reason. Every word she spoke was more cold than usual, and her eyes were narrowed, almost as if she were glaring at Jen.

Jen did what she was told, feeling extremely self-conscious under the alien woman’s intense gaze.

As soon as she had finished, Mali yanked the stick from between her fingers. She held it impatiently, waiting for it to register.

As Mali’s smile dropped, so too did Jen’s heart.

She knew what Mali was going to say before the alien even opened her mouth.

“Jennifer, you’re not pregnant.” Mali's voice was cold and angry.

She was going to need to have sex with Stemp again.

A week ago, the thought of that had thrilled her, but so much had happened since then.

What would Fezren say?
